A journey through game writing and development.

Biography
I was born in St. Louis, Missouri and spent my early years living in the suburb of Florissant, MO. At age 10 I moved to Charlotte, NC. I have also lived in Boone, NC and Denver, CO.

Education
After graduating High School I spent two years studying radio productions at Appalachian State University before transferring to the Art Institute of Colorado in the bachelors degree program of Digital Media Productions. Months before I was was set to graduate, my degree program was totally dissolved and I was put into Digital Filmmaking and Video Productions, which added another year of classes. I found I had no interest in that program. I moved back to Charlotte and I am now currently enrolled as a student in Simulation and Game Design at Central Piedmont, the first public college to offer a game design degree in the United States.

Philosophy
I am a big fan of Joesph Campbell’s Hero with a Thousand Faces along with Christopher Vogler’s Writer’s Journey. Vogler has done a fantastic job of breaking down the Hero’s Journey for movies and is still the industry standard for game stories. In most of the game development books I’ve picked up, they used Vogler’s breakdown to explain the Hero’s Journey, but they are using movies as examples. I believe because of the interactivity and the same with Dr. Richard Bartle observations of Massive Multiplayer systems that video game players are taking on the persona of the Hero unlike being a passive observer with movies. This is why a new way of looking at the Hero’s Journey, a breakdown, and using video games as examples to help future designers is needed. That is one of the main reasons why I originally started this site.

Hobbies
I am a Gamer, I have been for almost all my life. I started out very young on the Atari 2600 playing my first favorite game, Pitfall 2: Lost Caverns. I eventually moved on to my NES and my first love of a game: The Legend of Zelda. My favorite games now include Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell, Bungie’s Halo, and Blizzard Warcraft and Diablo.

I may be getting a late start to game development, but my education in other digital media has given me a wide range of skill and ideas that I can apply and be unique compared to other game designers.
